Reimagine the Possibilities.
It’s been an incredible journey over the past four decades, and to be on this new pathway forward is exhilarating. I feel like I’ve been a time traveller experiencing diverse realms, including policing, corrections, corporate security and consulting, of course. It’s been quite an adventure, and I’m continuing to expand my horizons.
Since 1999, I’ve been dedicated to co-creating safe and healthy communities. I have had the pleasure of working throughout Canada and overseas, and my work as a built environment practitioner remains my passion.
In the hustle and bustle of our cities and all the chaos, we have lost our sense of place and are truly disconnected from the essence of our very being – nature and one another.
Ultimately, we must strive to improve our quality of life, and particularly the lives of young children and youth throughout our country. It’s our duty!
Safe Pathways is all about our built and natural environments, whether you live on a small Gulf Island on the West Coast or in a thriving urban metropolis. Join me as we begin to focus our efforts upstream and dive deep into the abyss of prevention with a generational purpose.
The Public Health Association of British Columbia defines upstream prevention as a proactive approach that addresses the root causes of health issues (known as the social determinants of health) before they manifest as illness or crisis.
The foundation of my work is grounded in a Full SPECTRUM approach using Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Placemaking and British Columbia’s Healthy Built Environment (HBE) toolkit – all considered best practices.
Through collaboration with community safety leaders, public health professionals and non-profit organizations dedicated to youth development, we will inspire young people through teachings which are truly grounded in prevention.
Let this immersive experience begin, and I encourage you to be part of the upstream movement.
